Blood Pressure Tips

Normal blood pressure can vary by age but 120/80 is an accepted normal range especially if you are between the ages of 20 and 50.
*** (A.M.) For most accurate readings it is best to take your blood pressure first thing upon waking while you are still laying in bed after spending 10-15 minutes in wakeful rest.
(P.M.) Alternatively, taking your blood pressure right before dinner after having relaxed for 10 to 15 minutes and / or before a bath or shower, or just just before bed after briefly resting all provide accurate readings.
Blood pressure readings taken during the day due to activity and rushing around are not as meaningfully accurate.
Important factors ensuring your blood pressure reading is correct.
1. Empty your bladder first.
2. Support your back by leaning against a chair rest or back rest.
3. Keep your legs uncrossed.
4. Support your feet by resting feet on the floor or elevating feet on a couch or leg rest.
5. Put the BP cuff on bare arm.
6. Don’t have a conversation.
7. Support arm at heart level.
Note: Putting the cuff over clothing can add 10-40 mm HG. Not following all the other guidelines can add anywhere from 5-15 mm HG
to your blood pressure reading providing you inaccurate levels.
