Side Lying Position Benefits

Side-lying position is a fantastic treatment position for both Acupuncture and massage including 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancy massage. Many of you who have come for treatments have probably had me place you in side- lying position at various times. It’s great for shoulder issues, hip and sciatic pain, IT Band tightness as well as certain low back conditions as well.

Over the years many patients have commented on how comfortable the Acupuncture side-lying position is compared to all other positions. Even more comfortable than the side-lying position they were using for sleeping.

FIRST PHOTO: This shows the correct placement of the arms, legs and pillows for optimum comfort in side- lying sleeping position. As you can see in this position the top leg is bent and forward resting on a pillow, while the bottom leg is straight and most of the weight is on the front of the hip (ASIS) which disperses the body weight equally from head to toe. The top arm also has a pillow which makes it easy to lean forward thus supporting the body weight and taking pressure off the bottom shoulder.

SECOND PHOTO: The old saying of “pillow between the knees” is actually incorrect! As you can see from the second photo both knees are bent and the pillow is in-between the legs. This is actually very unstable, does not disburse the body weight evenly and puts all the downward force on the bottom hip thereby increasing hip friction and discomfort. This pillow between the legs position will often make hip pain worse come morning!

Remember pillows are your friend but just not between both knees! Give the first photo option a try for a much more comfortable and restful sleep all night long!
