Regular Acupuncture and the Importance of De Qi for Wellness, Health and Balance:

Every week I receive positive feedback and affirmations that acupuncture is vital to many of my patients overall health and wellness. We often think of acupuncture as being used only for particular pain problems and that the term “maintenance” and “stress relief” is typically glossed over as being overused or generalized as; “who doesn’t have stress? Or, “how can you measure maintenance benefits anyway?” This is true, we all have stress, but the difference is how we cope with our stress and how we function as human beings who are comfortable in our skin on a day to day, and second by second basis, without being anxious, scared, worried and detached. Many of us live stuck in our heads and are not living in our bodies, and as a result, are not really living and experiencing each and every moment of our human existence. Acupuncture restores balance in our body so that we can once again feel at ease, feel present and live with peace and contentment.

Body balance is restored when the qi/ki is returned to its flowing and harmonious state. During a treatment the Acupuncturist and patient can feel what is referred to as the De Qi sensation that indicates the body’s natural Qi flow is being restored. De Qi’s fundamental role in acupuncture is very important. Its significance was first mentioned circa 100 B.C., in the Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine). This ancient text is recognized as the first major compilation of Traditional Chinese Medicine and continues to serve to this day as the canonical acupuncture text. The Neijing is divided into two books: Su wen (Plain Questions), which mainly describes Chinese medical theory and the Ling shu (Spiritual Pivot), which focuses manly on the practice of acupuncture.

Chapter 9 of the Ling Shu states that; “The acupuncturist should devote all his/her concentration to the needle, keeping the needle on the surface and moving it gently, until the qi has arrived.” The Japanese style acupuncture that I practice lives by this creed with it’s shallow and gentle needle insertion, focus on feeling for the arrival of qi, and using the pulses as a feedback system to verify the body is returning to balance. The Ling Shu in chapter 1 states that; “For acupuncture to be successful, the qi must arrive (qi zhi). Acupuncture’s effects come about like the clouds being blown away by the wind restoring the clear blue sky”. Our thoughts, stresses, emotions and pain clutter our mind, stagnate the free flow of energy within our body and contribute to our discomfort, illness, distress and dis-ease. My goal when performing each and every acupuncture treatment is to not only address your pain, but to also restore balance and harmony to you body, mind and spirit allowing you to be the BEST YOU possible!
